Prisons and the imprisoned

Some people smuggle drugs into prison – and some, books.

First time I met Debra in Pisac village in Peru – her demeanour stood out, an inherent “motherly vibe” that I got accustomed to that, externally showed as offering to help others, to serve others… but it’s not until I actually sat down with her – on my last day of being there, that I really felt through the reasons why.

Debra was an educator across 6 different state prisons in the United States for 11 years. During that time she gained a moving insight into a life behind the doors most of us don’t see. Initially she joined the mindset of “prisoners were bad” – only through her work gain a different understanding.

I invite you to join this conversation and make your own opinion…

We talked about honour.

We talked about freedom.

We talked about shame.

But amongst many other things – this conversation is coloured by Debra’s depth of feeling and perception of her experience. I hope you can learn something from it.
